Watercolour for Beginners

If you’re new to watercolours or want to improve your skills and techniques while enjoying a class with like-minded people, this relaxed and informal workshop is perfect for you.

This workshop is designed for total beginners, starting from the basics. You will learn about different types of watercolour papers, my preferences, the reasons behind them, and how to stretch your paper and when you need to.
We’ll also cover different watercolour paints and types of brushes. You’ll be introduced to basic colour mixing and learn how to create a variety of beautiful colours using only 3 primary colours. Then, you’ll learn various watercolour effects and techniques using the new colours, practice different brushstrokes, and create resource pages to take home for further learning.
Finally, you’ll finish with a small artwork using the techniques learned, leaving you feeling like a true artist! All necessary painting materials for the workshop are included in the cost. You’ll leave with a small palette of leftover paints to take home, plenty of inspiration and new knowledge to continue practising at home, along with your watercolour notes and a small masterpiece.

This workshop is perfect for introducing beginners to watercolour painting or for self-taught watercolour artists struggling with their results.

All workshops are led by me, Jodie Westall Kimpton. I am a professional artist, watercolour tutor, and gallery owner with over 30 years of experience in painting and design. Watercolour is my favourite medium; it serves as my daily meditation and brings me joy. It has often been a source of therapy for me and provides a quiet space where my heart finds clarity amidst the noise of life. The simple act of immersing myself in my painting is incredibly rejuvenating. I look forward to sharing my art journey and evening with you.
